Riding boots come from the manufacturer at least an inch taller than your calf, so the ankles need to break down so they look somewhat "wrinkled." To break these types of boots in faster...put Vaseline on the INSIDE of the ankles and other places that need to break down; it softens the leather a bit. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Reviewer: Mercades from East coast Shoe Size: Felt half size larger than marked Shoe Width: Felt true to width Pros:They're leather so they'll last a lifetime. They have good treads and nice leg support.. I don't think you could twist an ankle in these if you tried! I get compliments on them all the time. They are light on your feet even though they are so tall - they hit right below the knee.Cons:Because they are leather, they take a long time to break in, get ready for some calluses. It takes quite a while to lace them up, a zipper would have been nice but might have taken away from the look. Felt a half size larger than marked. These boots look great, even on my feet. The problem is that I have not been able to wear them for more than 30 minutes at a time. The heel cuts into my skin and causes lots of pain and difficulty walking. I even took them to a shoe repair store and he was unable to give any suggestions but he was able to temporarily repair my cheap boots. I will continue to try to break these in slowly but don't expect to be able to wear them for long periods of time for quite a while. All in all, I wish I had not bought them and perhaps bought cheaper shoes that would not cut into my skin nearly as much. I couldn't find a single flaw, really. Yes, the leather is very hard for the first few days/weeks, you may want to consider a special pair of wool socks.Be careful choosing the right size, keep in mind that European sizes are different! I typically wear a 7.5 or 8, but since these don't come in half sizes I ordered an 8. They were too big, so I ordered the 7 and they fit wonderfully. One note: if you have thick calves, you probably won't like these boots, as the leg portion is narrow all the way up. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Reviewer: Anonymous from Shoe Size: Felt true to size Shoe Width: Felt true to width Great product! Bought them to go with my Halloween costume as a cop they worked great. They take a while to lace up but it it worth it. I want to wear them more often but want to wear them with dresses and it has been to cold. They're very stiff at first, but after just a couple weeks of casual wearing they're already softening up. I don't lace them all the way up yet because the feet are still too stiff and bite into my ankles a bit, but that will end in time. NO arches in them, which is exactly what I wanted! I look forward to having these boots for many years to come, which is why I like Docs so much! They look spectacular, and short of running over them with a car, they are just about indestructible. I've worn them through most of the winter, and my feet are always warm. I'm pretty much thrilled with them. One really has to be ready to put some work into these boots. They are sturdy like you wouldn't believe, which comes in handy on cold days and such, but they take a good deal of work to break in. I've had them for about 3 months, I wear them at least 3-4 times a week, and they are just starting to give a bit. I'm riding a motorcycle and have decided to buy some boots to block the winter wind when I ride. I initially bought the 1940 and immediately loved them. They did feel a bit large but I lace them tight and it's fine. This was my ever first boots and I was so thrilled with the feeling so I went on and bought also the taller 9663 (nearly knee-high); what can I say? Awesome boots! The leather of the 9663 is smoother and slicker, and in fact even though they are much taller than the 1940, it seems they weigh less. If you have a budget for one pair, I would say go for the 9663. I find the 1940 more comfortable for motorcycle gear shifting due to the bulky toe box. Overall both models are great and I wear them all the time even when I'm not riding. They mean business when you wear them. I can get such an ego trip when I go out in them and the attention they get from people is awesome. Wears this shoe: What can't you wear with them :) Reviewer: A from Shoe Size: Felt true to size These shoes are great! Recommended that you wear long socks underneath docs. The first couple times (until they're broken into) they might rub a bit on your heel...wasn't too bad though. I wouldn't suggest wearing them everyday when you first get them. Weekends and so forth.Definitely a fashion boot. Wanna catch someone's attention? THESE WILL DO THE TRICK! (=They are definitely worth it, & Be prepared to loop your shoe strings through 20 eyelets. Today I have my boys in 966311004 20 eyelet boots. It took a while for the boys to get used to as this is the first time they have been tight laced to practically knee level. After an initial break in period they say they are very comfortable although they moan about the time it takes to lace them up.
