I have had this shoe for a year. It still is not broken in. The leather is very stiff and uncomfortable. The shoe is built well but not the best for hiking and I am a experienced hiker. The leather does not flex enough and rubs around the ankles. The shoes cannot be laced tight around the ankles to keep debris from getting in. The leather is just too stiff. I am very disappointed.

These boots are bomb proof! I have always been a fan of other hiking boots but now favor these. These boots are solid in construction and fits like a glove. They are heavier than others and took more time breaking but worth the time and weight. Not to mention the Vibram soles slip right into crampons as needed. These are the best quality boots I have ever owned and expect them to hold up for a lifetime.

Searched for the wilderness for ages. Because I couldnt try on a shoe, I got the wrong size to start with (my fault). Returned the first pair and ordered again.Got the perfect fit, 2nd time around.Still wearing them in. A lot stiffer than I imagined and much more sturdy than all other shoes I own so I am taking my time wearing them in.Super happy with my purchase.I can even wear these to work with business trousers without anyone blinking an eyelid.

  • Classic hiking boots that still works December 21, 2011

I have always wanted a pair of these classic hiking boots since it first came out decades ago. The new Merrell Wilderness appears to be the same well made I remember years ago and will take a lot of breaking in compared to others. I bought these because I will be able to resole them, it still looks good with jeans and casual pants after many years, copied but not equaled in quality. I am happy with my purchase and will purchase a second pair.

This boot has been around for over 20 years for a very good reason. Worth every penny. FYI... a full cow-hide can only make two (2) full-grain "one-piece" boots. As opposed to the normal 7-8 pairs that can be made from the same hide using standard construction methods. These boots look good on the trail, on a Harley, or even with a pair of slacks just stomping around the urban jungle in the rain ... pretty much my "go to" shoes when ever I need to protect my feet, or if I am on my feet for long periods of time. The quality Italian craftsmanship and the one piece welt construction is awesome. Super comfortable once you break them in. (It took me a couple of weeks of daily wear before I took them off-road.) No blisters, no pain, and with rock solid protection. I changed the laces to a pair of Peak 72" black boot laces just for the more conservative look with my slacks. (kept the factory blue ones as spares in my pack) And used a little SnoSeal on the seams to insure total waterproofing all the way around ... just in case. The main reason I bought the Merrell Wilderness, besides the iconic Merrell name, is the fact that it is the only boot in the Merrell inventory that a good cobbler or shoe repair shop can replace the Vibram Rocca soles. If you maintain these boots and treat them well, they should last you a lifetime. Literally. Compare that to buying a new pair of boots that wear out every year (at about $125 ea) and you know you bought something of value. Go for it!

Had a pair years ago that disappeared--was glad to find them again, still in production. Old school looks and quality. Classic style. durable, comfortable. (not light). A bargain considering how well they are made. Why aren't all shoes this good?

I found the Wilderness after 2 1/2 years of casually searching for a high quality European hiking boot. I will only wear these boots for hunting, hiking, backpacking and outdoor treks. I bought them to replace my 17 year old Vasque Super Hiker II's. From looking at the quality of the Merrill's, I believe they come out of the same Italian factory as Vasque used to. The fit feels the same, and it feels like it's based on American (English) shoe sizing. They fit true to what I measure on a Brannock Device. NOT MADE IN CHINA! The Norwegeion Welt is a plus, it will hold a resoling better than a heat welded sole. It has no gore tex, which is just another layer to sweat through, and gore tex is only warranted for 2 years. (Boots are just well broken in at that point!) With a quality silicone paste waterproofing like Vasque Nature Seal or Biwell Silicone, these boots should be waterproof indefinitely, as long as they are maintained. The only thing I would add to the boot is a lace lock on the third lace holder down from the top, but I may have them removed form my Vasque's and have a shoemaker install on the Merrill. I had a pair of Limmer Boots from Maine which were imported from Germany. They were based on metric sizing and did not fit properly. The gussets on the tounge of the Limmer Boot is not as thick or as well stitched as on the Merrill and the Merrill has thicker leather, and they cost $100.00 less! These are highest quality boots for the discriminating buyer.

A little bit wider than I expected, but still fit fine. Very durable, and the leather looks great. I feel I can walk through anything mother nature puts in my path in these things!

A proven rugged shoe. Be prepared to spend time breaking in a full leather shoe like this. The time spent is worth it. As it starts to conform to the profile of your foot, you will appreciate the quality workmanship of these boots.

I searched for a long time trying to find an all purpose boot that gives the kind of support my badly worn out feet need. The first time I walked in my Merrill Wilderness boots I new I would never need to try on another pair of boots. This is my second pair. After 5 years the first pair still looks brand new but my Doctor told me to get another pair because my feet tend to do strange things to the uppers. After 5 years of everyday wear I barely put any wear on the vibram sole. I don't know what they put in those soles and heels but they outlast every other sole/heel I have ever owned by a longshot. The Italian craftmanship is superb, far superior to the Merrill's made in Asia. If you want an all around boot with the best support you can get, try Merrill's Wilderness. I hope they never stop making these boots.

  • Heavy and bulky - great for the Harley October 21, 2010
Reviewer: Mr B from Ventura, Ca

I purchased these boots for riding my Harley because: 1. Merrell is my favorite boot. 2. Per other reviews they can be resoled. 3. I have the option to hike or walk out of any situation. For riding they?re awesome and help me keep my 850lb motorcycle upright. For hiking they are bulky and heavy so I wouldn?t use them except in maybe the most extreme conditions. These boots look and feel great but a little break in is required.

After I added green surefoot insoles, I liked the feel of these boots tremendously. Unfortunately, despite the nearly single piece upper (which would typically indicate that the manufacturer was interested in keeping water out) the boots leak like a sieve at the welt. Walking through a heavy dew results in sodden feet - that is not hyperbole. I did not expect complete waterproofness but this is ridiculous.

This boot is the kind that seems to be going out of style even though its the best you can find. And Merrel is still having theirs made in Italy and they still use the same high quality leather and other materials. I love the fit, sliding my foot into the boot feels like a hand in glove, no lacing hassles or anything.

I've been faithful to wearing Merrell shoes and "Tennis boots" for years. The only problem I've had with them is the fact that I can go through a Vibram sole pretty quickly. Now this is no discredit to Merrell or Vibram. I just wish Vibram could build a sole that would last as long as a Merrell shoe. So, I began my quest for a quality resoleable boot, and I found it! These Wilderness boots have tons of support with a slightly narrow heel and roomy toebox. I haven't broken in a pair of stiff boots like these since my Bootcamp days nearly 15 years ago at MCRD San Diego. It took me a good 48 hours of wear time to get these boots broken in. At first they felt a half size too big, but once they began to break in and I got a little "roll" in the sole, the fit started becoming way more familiar and true to my size. These are quality boots.
