Light Hiker, Not for Backpacking

The Legacy GTX seems like a typically well designed and made Merrell boot. Merrells almost always fit me well, often fit me best. This boot was no different. Unfortunately, I am looking for a heavier duty backpacking boot and so had to return it. I would classify the design as on the low side of a mid cut boot, i.e. decent ankle support, but not great. It uses Merrell's grade 4 insole, which is fairly stiff, but I would suggest it's best for general hiking or short trips with packs less than 20 lbs.It appears very well made and looks good. It fit well with a roomy toe box and nice heel cup. The tread looks like it will grip very well. It has a nice under foot cushion. It accepted my aftermarket heat molded inserts well. The position of the last lacing point below the quick-release hooks seemed to impede the flex of the boot somewhat. I think this was exasperated by the low-mid cut. This is why I dinged it one star. Ultimately it just did not meet my "beefiness" requirements.
Too early to tell

it's way too early to write a review of a shoe/boot. I've owned them for about two weeks, and barely even worn them. I will say that right out of the box they feel more narrow than any of the other Merrells I have owned (about 6 pairs). Last ones were great, very similar in look to this model, but very different fit. Gone is the wide roomy toe box, and the leather on the boot is more rigid (not a bad thing) than the last pair. These feel more supportive through the ankles. moderate arch support. Merrell has gone through some changes through the last 15 years or so that I have been wearing them, most of the changes concern fit and quality. My first pair lasted about 4 years, best light hikers I ever had. Next pair were junk, barely made it a year. these feel like they will fall somewhere in the middle. I really miss the wide toe box of the last pair, but that model has been discontinued... too bad. Shoe buy should really send these review requests after two or three months, not weeks.bottom line: not a bad boot, but Merrell has done better in the past.please disregard the star rating as I have not worn them enough to offer a more accurate ratingCheers

I just spent ten days elk hunting in the olorado wilderness. I wore these hikers every day. Met my expectations were met - they were lightweight and kept my feet dry. However, I would not use these for mid to heavy weight backpacking. I'll use these again next year.
