I was looking for a lightweight, water resistant, all-around hiking type shoe that fit well. My unique foot problems make this a difficult task. The Mephisto Battler gave me an excellent, comfortable fit right out of the box. When my orthotic insoles were inserted in place of the Mephisto insole, there was instant comfort and plenty of upper shoe space. The shoe is a little pricey, but the comfort afforded is worth it to me. I wear them everywhere.

Like all Mephisto, a perfect fit for me. I like the height of the ankle part. The tread is not overly aggressive but works well and is comfortable. Gore-tex is great for hiking.

I really enjoy this type of boot, especially during the fall, winter, and early wet spring. The Battler isn't a heavy duty hiking boot. I wear it mainly as a casual boot during the elements of the seasons. It does have gortex but no extra insulation. For more extreme weather in which you'll be outside for long periods of time, I would find a sturdier boot. But for casual wear and being comfortable, this is my number 1 pick.
