For starters rating anything 5 stars requires an explanation. And to be a 5 star product you can't miss anything. To rate a product 5 stars, you need to have used like products to make an educated comparison. I'm over 52, have purchased, and worn out many hiking boots. Lowa Trekker WXL materials and construction: Superb, rigid rubber soles with flex, able to handle a 50+ pound pack, Nubuck leather with precision stitching, and metal eyelets that are polished with hinges for correct pressure and proper alignment while laced. The tongue has a nice pleat about halfway, so when laced, there isn't that inordinate pressure on your arch that can make your foot numb. And then, there is glove leather lining. How many boots have you owned that are glove leather lined? Comfort: When on your feet they feel snugly intact, as if your feet were poured into them, molded even. No hot spots, seams or overlaping material, that would create a pressure point. Another feature that is missing, that makes this boot great, is GORE-TEX. Nothing against it, just makes my feet hot. I don't hike water much because I live in Arizona. I know, some will say that's a lot of money for boots. They are worth every penny, and remember, they are made by boot craftsmen in Germany. Skip a few high dollar coffee's and you'll have the difference. Since I've been turned on to Lowa boots, I'll never buy another! I wear Smartwool heavy trekking socks and ordered 1/2 size larger, perfect!
