I usually wear a size 11 running or hiking shoe so I ordered a size 11 thinking that the shoes were made to wear with very thick socks, but the size 11's that I received were too small when I put the thick socks in them. One size larger to accommodate the thick socks plus liner socks seems about right. I haven't been able to test them out on a major mountain yet, but I have worn them on a couple of local hikes and they seem OK. As one might expect, they are stiff and a bit "clompy" but not as bad as you might think. They're not like ski boots.

I bought these boots early this year for planned climbs of Mt Adams, Mt Hood, Mt Ranier, Mt Baker, and Glacier Peak. So far so good - only Glacier Peak left on the list. I took these out to break them in on some local hills thinking they'd be like ski boots but they weren't. I've worn them from trailhead to summit and back on those four peaks and had nary a problem. They are step in crampon compatible and I had no problem climbing a sixty degree ice wall to get around a Bergschrund near the summit of Mt Baker. Most of the time in camp I just take the liners out and wear those as shoes and pop them in the bottom of my sleeping bag to keep them warm and dry.

My husband and I got these boots for a mountaineering trip to Mt. Baker in WA. We used rentals on previous trips, but this time, the investment was well worth it! Of the different boots we that we tried, these felt the least bulky. Usually finding a correct fit is problematic for both me and my husband. He has a long narrow foot and I have a wide foot. Because of the quality of the inner soft boot, we both were quite comfortable. The biggest challenge for both of us was the heel...it's very wide. You need some heel movement because the outer boot is so stiff, but you don't want too much when you are front-pointing with crampons. We were able to find insoles that resolved much of the fit problem. We were both extremely pleased with the boots' performance. Two of the guides we were with had the same boots that we bought. After trying several brands, they agreed that the Lowa Civetta Extreme had the most benefits for them.
