Q. What are Shin Splints?
A. The phrase "shin splints" is usually used to describe pain at the front of the lower leg, or shin.
What causes it?
While "shin splints" is not a medical diagnosis, the discomfort being experienced is likely indicative of one. The most common cause of shin splints is medial tibial stress syndrome, which is an inflammatory condition of the front part of the tibia, often brought on by strenuous activity.
People with over-pronated (flat) feet often suffer from shin splints, and may benefit from wearing running shoes with additional arch support or orthotics. Consult your physician for proper diagnosis and treatment of foot pain.
