As with most Hi-Tec boots, this shoe is lightweight, unsupportive. I think it needs a higher arch and stiffer shank, and has a wide heel pocket.

This shoe is very big in the front half. Your foot almost rattles around in it. My only other real complaint is the rough-surfaced fabric used on the inside of the Achilles' area. I wished they'd used leather there, because this stuff abrades a bit.On the positive side, its sole is remarkably firm and supportive for such a lightweight shoe. I think you really could work or hike in this thing, although I wouldn't want to spend this kind of money on a shoe just to beat the snot out of it. I bought it as a durable, supportive quasi-dress shoe to wear with jeans, and it fits the part. It looks great, with subdued brown leather the color of a Hershey bar and a blessed lack of the loud "hey, look at me" styling that makes so many modern boots unsuitable for anything more formal than Bozo duty.On the whole, this is an expensive pair of shoes by my cheapskate standards, but you do get your money's worth. Thumbs up.

Really great water resistant leather shoe, very roomy. What I don't like is the height of the shoe could be reduced a little bit because I feel like I am hurting the ankle, or I would put is as pressure in the ankle.

I usually swear by Merrell Hiking Boots but an ad in Outside Magazine caught my eye so when I saw these at this price I said what the hay, I will buy them . It was the best choice I made all year . They're a great fit, great style, comfortable, water and snow roll right off them. All Leather makes them worth the money. I took one of my day long hikes in Norhtern N.J. to take some photographes and walked through some nastey crap and these were up to the task. I will buy another pair just to keep in the house as a back up. Great for hunting too. Don't miss out buy these boots !!

I've worn all editions of the Altitude. The V-Lite Altitude Ultra is a considerable improvement over the previous edition (Altitude IV). The upper material is much more durable. There are less overlapping pieces, since the seams are sewed from the backside and folded in. These seem to weigh less than the IV, and the vibram sole is a also welcome improvement. These are comfortable from the get go and provide a very stable feel. All of that being said, the Altitude is still more like an athletic shoe than a hiking shoe. I'd only use it for the lightest hiking adventures. The tongue area is also still pretty wide, so it takes some effort to lace and tie the top two hooks - at least until the foam in the tongue starts to compress with wear. The laces seem to run too long, I had mine cut and re-crimped at a bowling alley. The v-lite technology does seem to help in keeping things dry. All in all, a very good pair of ultra-light hiking shoes.
