The shoe was a bit stiff the first day but after that my son has liked it very much. I think these shoes are going to wear well and the laces stay tied. Last year's shoe look like he'd had them a year after the first week of school, these have no scuffs yet. The one thing I feel I should mention is that my son's feet are narrow and although these are not too wide on him I wonder if your boy's foot was on the wide side if there would be a problem?

These shoes are well worth the extra money over other black lace-ups that are a little cheaper. These hold up MUCH better and my son finds them completely comfortable. We are on our second pair after outgrowing the first.
