Senior Perl Software Engineer

Shoebuy.com, Inc., located in the Boston Financial District, seeks a Senior Perl Software Engineer who will thrive by working with a focused leader in the business-to-consumer space. The ideal candidate will be motivated, thoughtful, and direct in finding the right solutions and building upon existing ones to increase the speed of delivery.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the other development team members, internal users, and project managers to implement new features and functionality to meet business requirements. Develop for the Internet including retail B2C/B2B applications, reports and tools.
  • Revise, re-factor, and maintain existing code with an emphasis on improving performance, security, and readability.
  • Contribute to the creation of clear and carefully planned specifications that address business requirements, user interfaces, process flow, performance, and scalability.
  • Participate as part of an Agile team and contribute to all stages of the development life-cycle including architecture, design, coding, and unit testing.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree CS/Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ yrs. developing Perl-based web applications and scripts, running in a Linux/UNIX environment.
  • 5+ yrs. experience with Apache web server, Perl interoperability, and associated technology (mod_perl).
  • 4+ yrs. SQL experience (Oracle 10+ preferred) including writing efficient queries, prepared statements, and database optimization.
  • 4+ yrs. experience working and developing scripts in a Linux/UNIX environment.
  • Understanding of object-oriented design concepts, Model-View-Controller (MVC) frameworks, and experience building reusable modules.
  • Understanding of HTML 4.0/XHTML 1.0, CSS 2.1+, DHTML, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with Mercurial or other version control software including CVS, SVN or Git.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to manage time, meet sensitive deadlines, and assume ownership of responsibilities.

Recommended additional experience includes the following:

  • Apache Web Server/mod_perl expertise.
  • Experience working as part of an Agile team.
  • System administration experience.

The Senior Java Software Engineer will contribute to building the next generation of Shoebuy's e-commerce platform.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain e-commerce software, including code for catalog search algorithms, page rendering elements/widgets, and website browse structure.
  • Simplify/refactor data to increase efficiency and support new initiatives.
  • Stay current on the latest, emerging Web technologies and trends to enable Shoebuy.com to power multiple websites and sell a variety of products.

The candidate for this position must have the following experience:

  • Bachelor's degree CS, MIS or related field.
  • 5+ yrs. developing Java J2SE, servlets and JSP applications.
  • 5+ yrs. SQL(Oracle Preferred).
  • 2+ yrs. JavaScript.
  • 3+ yrs. Linux/Unix.
  • Experience with one or more Java application frameworks.
  • Familiarity and implementation experience with: HTML, AJAX, JSP Taglibs, JDBC, Tomcat, Java web service frameworks, and multi-tier software architectures.
  • 1-2 yrs experience with B2C e-commerce, contributing to scalable web-based applications right now.
  • Desire to accept broad challenges and the resourcefulness to succeed at them.
  • Commitment to providing the best online shopping experience to consumers.
  • Rich experience with all aspects of the development cycle including system analysis, data modeling, design, development, and unit testing.
  • Proven success as a major product development engineer.

Recommended additional experience includes the following:

  • Oracle database query performance and optimization techniques.
  • Search engine optimization.
  • Experience as a member of an Agile team.
