Established in Chicago in 1928 by Trafton Cole and Eddie Haan, Cole Haan was built on a reputation of quality, artisan craftsmanship and style. Cole Haan - which began as a men's footwear brand designing stylish and well made shoes for the sophisticated gentleman - was later expanded to include new products such as Cole Haan bags, Cole Haan belts and Cole Haan eyewear, all in all, maintaining its original spirit and reputation throughout its more than 70-year history. Although the new Nike Air technology of its new line of footwear represents the "modern" in Cole Haan's positioning, the company continues to stress the quality and craftsmanship suggested by the word "artisan." In the manufacturing process, a single craftsperson is responsible for each pair of shoes, overseeing its progress from beginning to and for putting the pair of completed shoes into the Cole Haan box himself or herself. This personal touch, combined with technological and stylistic innovation, is what Modern Artisan means to Cole Haan.
