This shoe is a replacement for the Defyance original and seems to be just fine - I did order it 1/2 size larger. This is a great shoe for walking, day hikes, and using at the gym.

Narrow enough for my narrow heel, yet roomy toe box, and comfortable even with tailors bunion. The mesh makes it a cool shoe in hot summer weather, and it looks great too---no flashy colors as many athletic shoes have now.
Wears this shoe: When walking on treadmill, or outdoors, or around home.

My very first pair of running shoes was Brooks' Defyance. I absolutely love them. After 400 miles, I was sold that I would buy another pair, so I upgraded to the Defyance 2, which I thought looked a bit nicer than the original Defyance. I really wish I would have purchased another pair of the Defyance instead. I've run with these new ones 3 times. After the 2nd time out, my right calf was killing me and I couldn't run for 3 days (it hurt too much just to walk down steps.) After 3 days rest, I went out again with them and after 2 miles my right calf started to tighten again so I cut my run short. The very next day, I put on my old Defyance shoes (which have a few miles left on them) and ran without a problem. Save the money and pick up the old pair if you can. I was told that the ONLY change was that the material used to make these is supposed to deocmpose faster in the dump once they are discarded. I think the changes had to more than just that. As one other side note, I think the Defyance 2 runs a smidge smaller than the Defyance so if you were close on the Defyance, you might consider going up a half size. Overall -- a huge disappointment.
