Birkenstock

Birkenstock Construction
With Birkenstock, wellness and comfort come first. From iconic Birkenstock sandals to casual clogs, you'll feel the difference in these quality classics. Few brands have been favorites for as long.

It couldn't be easier to trust an environment-friendly footwear brand that's stayed in step for over 240 years. Yes, this legendary label started creating its casual shoes before America was born. It's named for original German shoemaker Johann Birkenstock, whose quality craftsmanship became a tradition passed down to generation after generation. The roots of modern Birkenstock sandals and its other outdoorsy shoes trace back to 1897, when Konrad Birkenstock manufactured the company's first contoured footbeds, starting a new era of pioneering more naturally fitting, comfortable insoles. It's that caliber of quality and dedication to improving foot care that inspired Margot Fraser to found Birkenstock USA in 1966. After falling in love with the well-balanced, soft footbeds during a trip to Germany, she started importing them and helped bring orthopedic breakthroughs to America. In 1969, flexible — and environmentally sustainable — cork soles were first introduced. In 1973, advances in molding techniques allowed Birkenstock shoes and sandals to be made in a wider variety of sizes and shapes than most brands offered at the time.

Today, Birkenstock footbeds are more durable and shock-absorbing than ever, thanks to combining natural latex and cork with other innovations based on medical research. Beyond the sole-hugging insoles, expect one or more premium fabrics like leather, nubuck, or suede to further the tailored feel. Signature straps — two for best-selling Arizona sandals, three for Florida sandals, and one for the Gizeh thongs — plus rugged buckles add some refined yet rustic appeal. Mayari sandals play off those strapping variations, while Boston clogs offer extra warmth and stability. From deep heels and terrain-gripping tread to arch support and toe alignment, all Birkenstock styles really put the "bed" in "footbed." Maybe that's the biggest reason these green, supportive pairs are so popular with laid-back folks. Whether you're chilling on campus, sipping wine in a city café, riding a bike through the burbs, walking beach boardwalks, programming code, or jamming at an outdoor concert, you'll feel great all day in these comfy contoured classics.
