I have been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis and subsequent heel spurs for about a year and a half. I have a friend and also a sister who swear by the Birkenstock footbed and its arch support as the way to prevent those conditions. I do find that at the end of the day, if I've been wearing my Birkenstocks, my foot doesn't hurt as much as it does at the end of the day when I wear other types of shoes.

This is my third pair of Ibizas (all colors) - love the fit and feel, can walk forever in them but they aren't as bulky looking as some of the other birk sandals.

The underside of the straps were very rough. I had to use fabric softener on it to try to soften it. I do not wear socks or hose with them. Overall, though, I love this type of shoe. I have had foot surgeries and they work out fine.
