High tops, which have openings that extend to the top of the ankle, are the preferred style because they provide maximum ankle support, stability, and cushioning. Mid tops extend to the ankle and are lighter than high tops for enhanced speed. The less-popular low tops are also lighter for speed, but don't provide the needed ankle support for regular play.
